Temperate forests are found typically in coastal areas and placid winters and heavy rainfall or in in-land mountainous areas with mild climates. The temperatures in these forests differ throughout the year.  In these areas the there are high levels of precipitation (50-200 inches per year), which cause a moist climate throughout the year. Examples of where these temperate forests are found vary. They can be found in Canada, New Zealand, Pacific North-western United States and small parts of Europe.

Another way to describe temperate forest is by the soil, plants and animals. The soil in the forests is generally rich with a thick layer of decaying material. The plants species in the forest include cedar, cypress, Douglas fir, pine, spruce and redwood. There are some deciduous trees such as maple, mosses and ferns. Due to the high levels of precipitation and moderate temperatures, there is a long growing season, resulting in trees that grow very tall. Examples of the animals tat live in temperate forests are deer, elk, bear, salmon and owl.
